Early in 2002, the Gold Coast Marine Industry Association, in collaboration with Local and Federal governments, secured funding to undertake a professional Training Needs Analysis study of the leisure marine industry. This study was completed in October, 2002.
The study’s findings, together with recommendations for immediate and future training needs, were presented tp State and Federal Government representatives on November 6, 2002. As a direct result, approval was given for the establishment of a new government funded TAFE college located within the Coomera Marine Precinct. The purpose-build college opened in early 2008. It currently has in excess of 200 local and overseas students enrolled in a variety of highly specialised apprenticeship courses. Supply Chain Research
Throughout 2007 the Association assisted in an important industry supply chain research project which aimed to identify areas for improving the industry’s often complex supply chain. Recommendations flowing from this research project are currently being implemented by several participating companies. Gold Coast Waterways Maintenance Program:
Since its inception in 2001, the association has provided vital input into a number of State Government research projects involving the on-going maintenance of the Broadwater and its Seaway approaches. While $3 million was invested in dredging and maintenance programs between 2001 and 2005, further waterways maintenance programs are still urgently in need of completion. Marketing
With funding from the Gold Coast City Council in 2007, the association produced a 23 minute promotional DVD profiling the local marine industry. This DVD has proven to be an excellent tool in the development of significant export markets. |
Membership:
Marine Gold Coast membership currently stands at around 200. This represents approximately 50% of the Gold Coast’s marine industry companies, but more importantly, it represents of 80% of the people employed within the local marine industry.
The membership base covers a broad range of industry enterprises, the majority of whom would be classified as leaders in their particular fields of endeavour.
